“kmrt radio” History
1972 – 1992
“KMRT Radio” was an in-store radio network that played in Kmart stores from 1972 until 1992. The In-Store station was created by EchoSat, a company that produced in-store music and message systems for retailers. The tapes were prerecorded (Generally 3 weeks in advance of shipping) and shipped to Kmart stores across the country by Kmart’s corporate office in Troy Michigan. and featured a mix of background music, easy listening tunes, store announcements and advertisements for popular brands like Jordache jeans and Pony shoes. The tapes, which were played on loops and created a unique audio experience for shoppers, are now undergoing a massive audio restoration process by the Audio Salvage Project and are being made available via our “KMART Memories Radio Online (KMRO)” live stream.
